Start With the Work, Not the Listing
Used rig listings often lead with make, model, year, and asking price. Those details matter, but they do not establish whether the unit fits your field program. Begin with your operating envelope: planned well depths, expected load profile, tubing and rod handling requirements, required mast height, target hookload, road restrictions, and the type of carrier or trailer configuration your crews can support.
A unit built for shallow conventional work may be priced attractively but still be the wrong answer for deeper wells, heavier completion strings, or a more demanding service schedule. Likewise, buying excess capacity can tie up capital in a larger rig, higher transport costs, and operating complexity that your work does not require. Confirm the Core Specifications
Ask for the rig data sheet, not just a general description. Witness a Functional Test
Whenever practical, see the equipment operate. A static inspection can reveal visible defects, but a functional test is more likely to expose slow hydraulic response, brake issues, vibration, control problems, overheating, or irregular noise under load. If the unit cannot be operated, price that uncertainty into the transaction and expand the inspection scope before funds are released.
